Obituary for Jerry L. Rexford

Jerry Lee Rexford, a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and brother, of Bradford, Pa, received his call from Heaven on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at the Bradford Ecumenical Home, Bradford. Jerry was told his days were short a few times over the last several years, but he kept going with a smile on his face and a sharp humorous mind, against the odds.

Jerry was born on Christmas Eve, December 24, 1932 in Cherry Creek, New York, to Marion Steward Rexford and Kenneth Rexford. His family moved to Coudersport, Pa., where he graduated high school in 1950. Jerry was President of his Senior Class, played the saxophone in the band and was selected for the Pennsylvania State Band in his senior year.

Following high school, Jerry attended Bryant & Stratton Institute in Buffalo and graduated with an Associate Degree in Business Administration in 1952. In the Autumn of 1952 he enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and received his Honorable Discharge in 1960. He was stationed on the U.S. Coast Guard Destroyer Escort "Newell" during the Korean Conflict and later stationed at the Lifeboat Saving Station at Indian River Inlet, Rehoboth Beach, Delaware.

Jerry married the former Janet Swartwout on October 15, 1955, in Coudersport, Pa. They began their marriage in Coudersport, and then moved to Olean, NY, while he attended St. Bonaventure University, where he graduated with a B.S. in Business in 1960. Jerry moved his family to a wonderful little home in Derrick City, Pa, where he and Janet brought up six daughters. With two daughters at home and still in school, Jerry and Janet moved back to Coudersport to the home he grew up in, to care for his mom, and stayed to make Coudersport their home once again.

One of his favorite times were family vacations to Bethany Beach, Delaware. On one such trip, he came home with a dime in his pocket, after stopping at the Tastee Freeze in Foster Brook to get his girls an ice cream cone to finish off the vacation. Jerry was selfless and giving. In later years, he enjoyed family celebrations and visits with his growing family.

Jerry began his work career during high school at J.C. Penney in Coudersport. He went on to work for Dresser Tool Co., Stroehmann's Bakery, R.J. Reynolds, State Farm Insurance, Investor Diversified Services, Proctor & Gamble, LifeSavers, and in later years was self-employed. While employed by Proctor & Gamble, he was lovingly referred to as "The Tiny Tide Man" as he was often seen stacking local grocery stores with Tide and Ivory Soap. He worked hard to support his family.

In addition to his wife Janet, he is survived by six daughters "Jerry's Girls", Sharon Webb, Erie, Pa., Cathy (Glenn) Caruso, Glenshaw, Pa., Barbara (Ed) Mackey, Bradford, Pa., Jackie (Wayne) Dodge, Easton, Pa., Janell (Phillip) Stephens, Gulf Breeze, Florida, and Teri Rexford, Erie, Pa.

11 grandchildren,10 great grandchildren, as well as five step-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents and great grandson, Abel Nolan Mackey.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2018 from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at the Mascho Funeral Home, Inc. with a funeral service to immediately follow at the funeral home at 2:00 PM with the Rev. Ken Duffee officiating.

Go rest high on that mountain dad, until we meet again.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Mascho Funeral Home, Inc.
