Obituary for Neal G. McMillen

Neal G. McMillen, 78, of Bradford, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2019 at UPMC Hamot, Erie.

He was born on April 8, 1941 in Bradford, a son of the late Harold and Catherine Obenrader McMillen.

He was a 1959 graduate of the former St. Bernard High School, Bradford.

On May 18, 1968 in the St. Bernard Catholic Church he married Bonnie K. Smead who survives.

He served in the US Air Force from 1961 until his honorable discharge in 1965. While serving he was an Air Force police officer for two years in Germany and two years in Okinawa, Japan.

He was a member of the St. Bernard Catholic Church; where he served as an altar boy for several years while in school. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed bee keeping as a hobby in his later years. His great passion was always baseball. He was a great ball player during his youth and he played fast pitch softball in Bradford and for eleven years he coached Little League while he continued to play on his own softball team. Neal loved his family and he enjoyed teaching his boys and grandchildren how to have fun.

Prior to joining the Air Force Neal worked at the former Airco Speers. After his discharge from the military he worked as an iron worker for thirty three years. He belonged to the iron workers local #772 and was proud to have helped build many buildings in Bradford and the surrounding communities.

In addition to his wife of 50 years, Bonnie McMillen of Bradford he is also survived by three sons, Daniel (Jennifer) McMillen of Orchard Park, NY, Andrew McMillen and Jennifer McMillen of Bradford and Charlie McMillen of Bradford; one brother, Harold “Junior” (Boots) McMillen of New Hampshire; one sister, Mona (Alvin) Wehr of Texas; three grandchildren, Nathan McMillen and Katherine McMillen of Orchard Park, NY and Liah McMillen of Bradford and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by three sisters, Leona Schmetter, Esther Elinski and infant Mary Ann and two brothers, Donald McMillen and Robert McMillen.

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 22 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at the Mascho Funeral Home, Inc. with a Mass of Christian Burial at 1:00 PM at the St. Bernard Catholic Church with the Rev. Stanley Swacha as celebrant.

Private burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked the memorial contributions be made to the Bradford Area Public Library, 67 West Washington St., Bradford, PA 16701 or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Mascho Funeral Home, Inc.
